The  “Palheiros” of Tocha Beach!

It is thought that the Tocha Beach (aka Palheiros da Tocha), have been founded some 250 years ago, by fishermen who emigrate from some coastal villages of the Central-North Coast of Portugal, in search of new places to pursue their activities. Later, some residents of the nearest villages came too.

Those first inhabitants were subject to various extreme constraints, which included their modest economic status, the isolation and the difficult access to this place (without roads, with the access done by way of loose sand paths), the lack of building materials in Gândara (apart from adobes, clay and pine wood), and its difficulty in transportation to the site. There was also a seasonal fluctuation in the level of the sandy soil of the coastal dunes, caused by strong winds, which sometimes accumulated more sand, other times took sand away (natural phenomenon that has almost disappeared nowadays). These constraints led to the emergence of the "Palheiro of Tocha Beach", wooden hut typical of this coastal village, originally so called because their roofs were covered with straw, before being later replaced by clay tiles. Other similar constraints were in the origin of other variants of the "Palheiro", built in other coastal places of the Portuguese Center Region. But the "Palheiro" won distinction from "Palheiros" of other places, for two main reasons: its modest dimensions (these were smaller), and the fact that they remained until very late in the Tocha Beach, many years after its complete disappearance in other coastal villages!

The "Palheiros" were small buildings, made of planks of pine wood (there were plenty of pine wood in other places of the region,  who was cheaper and easier to transport (i must say that the forest around Tocha Beach was only planted in the two decades of 1920-1940. Before, this area it was composed by sandy dunes, with few trees and some ground vegetation)), with no more than 1 to 3 internal divisions. They were built, raised on deep piles (from 1 meter to 1.5 meters above ground level), thus avoiding that they would be half buried, or had its base exposed, depending if the wind was putting or removing sand.

Until the mid-twentieth century, the Palheiros were almost all the buildings of the village. However, by this time, the constraints mentioned above changed profoundly. The standard of living and the economic status of the population began to improve, which leads them to yearn for better comfort and livability. The isolation and the difficult access, were broken with the construction of a paved road. New building materials, of industrial production, became standards, such as the cement and bricks.

During the second half of the twentieth century, the Palheiros begin to disappear from Tocha Beach, slowly and progressively, being replaced by modern housing. Today there are few Palheiros. And almost every are, or modern replicas, or "hybrid" constructions,  in transition between the original Palheiros and the modern houses.

As I do not have photographs of the old Palheiros, i put here some photos I took from some tile panels, located in the outside walls of the Chapel of Tocha Beach. These tile panels were based on old photos. They were painted by Mr. Jorge Guerra, who is an artist specialized in this type of works. I took these photos in July of 2007.
